The client

Montezuma’s
Montezuma’s is a British chocolate brand based in West Sussex, UK. Their commitment to ethical sourcing means they only use ingredients that meet the highest standards with their products stocked all over the UK including retailers John Lewis and Sainsbury’s. Although specialising in dark chocolate, they wanted to focus on promoting their milk chocolate collection.

The brief

Eye-catching and mouth-watering visuals
The brief was to create eye-catching and engaging videos for social media that encourage people to buy Montezuma’s milk chocolate. When it comes to food shots, visuals are so important as is seeing the different flavours so we wanted to ensure each were included from the Hot Pickle (chilli and lime), and Space Hopper (orange) to Happiccino (coffee and cocoa nibs), and Minted (crunchy peppermint). Pre-production was a key part of this project as we had to ensure each flavour representation contrasted the other and were visually exciting. Once we had our shot list ready and we knew what props were needed, it was time to get into production.

Filming

Capturing content in-house
Production began with setting up our in-house studio with a green screen, lights, the Canon C70 and an array of lenses. We structured how we were going to film our shots because anyone who works with food knows how messy it can get! We started by capturing the chocolate bars in their packaging before moving onto the chocolate itself. Each ingredient was then captured both still or spinning. We had to think on our feet when breaking the chocolate bars as it didn’t quite go to plan, but it all came together in the edit.

Editing

A seamless edit
Post-production was an exciting part of this project as we really saw the vision coming together. Each scene was edited individually before being put together in a seamless edit. The breaking of the chocolate bar consisted of us rotoscoping the chocolate (digitally cutting it out frame by frame) to ensure the centre of the frame in between the break was clear for us to display the flavours. This technique was used throughout the editing process before adding movement to each element to give it characteristics.

The result

Enticing the audience
The final edit complete with music and colour brought a fun energy to the video. We added sound effects that helped enhance the movement of different elements and immerse the viewer into the world of Montezuma’s chocolate. With minimal changes from the client, the video was promptly signed off and is being promoted on Montezuma’s social media channels. And what’s better than working with chocolate…receiving some in the post as a thank you for the team to enjoy!
