The client

Pompey in the Community
Pompey in the Community is an award-winning charity that harnesses the motivational power of Portsmouth Football Club to promote education, healthy living, sporting participation and achievement among vulnerable and disadvantaged people of all ages. The John Jenkins Stadium is their new sports facility and community hub in the middle of the city.

The brief

Content that creates nostalgia and connection
Our brief was to create a film showing the work being undertaken by Pompey in the Community at the John Jenkins Stadium. At the time of filming, the project was only in phase 1 and they needed extra support to move into phase 2. The main call to action was to use the film as a platform to ask for the support required which would enable the community hub to become self-sustainable. The film was to consist of interviews, b-roll and drone footage which all needed to come together in a seamless edit that created nostalgia, connection and a desire for the audience to take action.

03 / Filming

Using film to tell a story
We interviewed Jodie, Head of Marketing and Fundraising at Pompey in the Community, along with other local businesses that had supported the project by donating their time and service including signage, wash facilities, and CCTV. Speaking to these supporters allowed us to demonstrate the various types of donations that enable a community hub to be put together, and examples of how other people/businesses can get involved. The b-roll we captured helped to support the interview content and provide the audience with visuals of what had been done so far and what still needs to happen.

Drone

Capturing the vastness of a site from above
We decided to incorporate drone footage into this project as it would really show off the scale of the John Jenkins Stadium and everything it has to offer. We used the DJI Mini 4 Pro which took flight just as the sun started to become lower in the sky. This gave us softer and warmer lighting to achieve a cinematic look. Filming with the drone gave us another perspective to see the stadiums and show off its fabulous location in the city of Portsmouth.

Editing

Setting the right pace and energy
From an editing perspective, the drone footage helped to situate the location of the stadium and add to the narrative as it was used as scene breakers to keep the viewer engaged and to set the right pace and energy. At the end of the film, we used Adobe After Effects to create a visually engaging graphic with 5 ways the audience can support their charity. Graphics are a valuable way to give a lot of information in a short time whilst remaining clear and easy to understand.

Sharing the build update with the community
We delivered a landscape version of the 4 minute video which has been shared across social media and on the charity’s website. The video was first launched at the Shaping Portsmouth Conference, hosted at Portsmouth Guildhall, which was well received by the local business community.
